Apple's HomeKit will light up new and old Philips Hue products this fall

Apple’s HomeKit platform has been a bit of a slow burner so far, but things might finally be hotting up. Philips announced yesterday that its Hue smart lighting range will be coming to the platform some time “this fall,” although the company hasn’t provided any details on what exactly this entails. Apple announced a bunch of new tricks for HomeKit at WWDC though, and if Hue lights are integrated into the platform then users should be able to use Siri to control the 16 million colors in the smart LED lights before the end of the year.

Rdio turns the snark up to '80s by reusing Apple's classic IBM 'Welcome' ad

As Apple unveiled its new music streaming service at WWDC yesterday, competitor Rdio responded by tweeting a welcome note — or rather, a “Welcome, Apple. Seriously.” note. Some Twitter users thought it showed “the upmost respect in welcoming competition,” but others recognized it as the backhanded compliment it was.

As press statements go it seems pretty friendly, but it’s actually a re-run of a famous ad Apple ran in The Wall Street Journal in 1981. The iPhone-maker’s original “Welcome, IBM. Seriously.” note ostensibly congratulated IBM on unveiling its first ever personal computer, but also took a moment to remind readers that “[Apple] invented the personal computer” as well as dropping some projected industry-wide sales figures into…

iOS 9 has a hidden iCloud Drive app

Apple’s vision for file management on iOS has always been to let things happen behind the scenes with minimal user input, but with iOS 9 the company appears to be making at least a small concession to those who feel more comfortable delving into folders and files themselves. 9to5Mac and MacRumors report that iOS 9 has an optional iCloud Drive app that lets users manage their iCloud files, much like they can on the web or with the Finder on Mac computers.

The app is apparently optional and needs to be switched on in Settings before it appears on the home screen, so Apple likely doesn’t plan to make it a core part of the iOS experience. But the app could make iCloud Drive a more usable alternative to competing cloud services like Dropbox,…

Destiny Expansion "The Taken King" Launching in September for $40 – Report

As rumored, the next major Destiny expansion is called The Taken King and will launch on September 15. That’s according to Kotaku, which obtained marketing material for the expansion and also corroborated the details with other, unnamed sources. The expansion will reportedly cost $40, which is twice the cost of Destiny’s two previous expansions, The Dark Below and House of Wolves.

Among other things, The Taken King is said to offer a new subclass for Destiny’s three classes. A new elemental super ability is also supposedly on the way.

Per Kotaku: “An electrical storm for Warlocks (arc); a gravity bow for Hunters (void); and a flaming hammer for Titans (solar). Hardcore Destiny players will notice that each of these abilities revolves around the element each respective class lacks today.”

The Taken King will also have a new raid in which players fight against Oryx, the father of Crota, according to the leak. The expansion is also expected to include new multiplayer maps, more Strikes, and more.

Publisher Activision previously referred to a new Destiny expansion coming this fall as the game’s biggest ever. The Taken King would be the first Destiny expansion offered outside of the game’s DLC pass.

The name “The Taken King” was first spotted earlier this year through trademark filings. Just last week, it popped up again through Red Bull.

Bungie did not comment on this report when approached by Kotaku.

For its part, however, Bungie has said it will have some Destiny news to announce at E3 next week. The developer also recently trademarked something called “Eververse.”

Bayonetta Dev to Reveal Brand New Game at E3

Bayonetta, Wonderful 101, and Metal Gear Rising developer Platinum Games will reveal an unannounced new title at E3.

According to IGN, the title is not Xbox One exclusive Scalebound, and is instead something the studio has never shown before.

Scalebound was announced during Microsoft’s press conference at E3 2014. Project director Hideki Kamiya said it is unlike anything the studio has made before and aims to “create new gameplay,” among other things.

“The one thing that I will say is that up until this point in my career, and up until this point in Platinum Games’ history, we’ve never made a game like Scalebound,” Kamiya said. “What I’m trying to do with Scalebound is create a very different kind of game than what I’ve created up until this point. We’re trying to create new gameplay, and that is a challenge for me personally.”

Kamiya said the Xbox One should help Platinum in its effort to make Scalebound a visually impressive experience.

“We’ve never tried to do something photo-real or something more realistic with that touch,” he said. “But it’s always been something I’ve wanted to try. Now having that opportunity has been both difficult but interesting. And the power of the machine is helping there. It’s definitely something Platinum Games has wanted to try, and now we’re getting our chance to do it, which is cool.”

Platinum’s creative producer, JP Kellams, added that it was an “important step” in Platinum’s legacy to work with a Western publisher such as Microsoft. He went on to say that Microsoft believes in Platinum’s vision for Scalebound, and that the companies have a “really open relationship.”

Scalebound is expected to make an appearance at Microsoft’s E3 press conference on June 15.

For the streaming music competition, threat of Apple Music turns to a sigh of relief

There are very few areas where music and streaming executives agree. Apple Music, seemingly, is one of them.

“I think I’ve never been more confident,” an executive at a streaming music company told The Verge following the Apple Music announcement. “We were all bracing ourselves, but we feel really good about it right now.”

Streaming music providers, so far, are breathing a sigh of relief after learning what Apple Music is — and isn’t. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek made his thoughts known. Multiple executives throughout the music and streaming industry have made it clear to The Verge that while it would be a success, they don’t believe that Apple Music will have the same industry-altering effect as its predecessor, iTunes, once had.

See, Drake was at WWDC today. He came on stage to talk about Apple Music wearing a vintage Apple varsity jacket, and was actually a little nervous, stumbling over his words on stage while talking about how he made it as an unsigned artist from Toronto. It was endearing, and real, and even a little bit humble.
