Prime Video has given a series order to God of War, an upcoming show based on the popular video game series. Deadline was first to report.
After first being announced in May, this greenlight is a significant milestone for a series that has been long-rumored and demanded by fans. In 2018, an inaccurate but viral post on social media was making the rounds claiming that the project starring Jason Momoa was moving forward at Netflix, which game director Cory Balrog cleared up as false–but causing him to publicly ask Netflix if they’d be open to exploring an adaptation.
Instead, the series has landed with Prime Video, with Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time) as showrunner and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men) as writers. According to Deadline, the series will follow Kratos, the God of War, after “exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece” as he “hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak–his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new Gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
