One of the major aces up the sleeve of Xbox has been its focus on backwards compatibility. Announced all the way back at E3 2015, backwards compatibility on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S covers a large chunk of the original Xbox and Xbox 360 library of games, mixing together a highlight reel of classic titles across a wide variety of genres.
Even better, a number of these games also sport several additional features at no extra charge. As detailed in our Xbox backwards compatibility guide, improvements to frame rate, load times, and image quality can be found on dozens of titles, and if you own them on disc or digitally, you won’t have to pay to play these games.
It’s worth noting that several of the games below have received remasters and have been bundled into dedicated collections over the years. Several Halo games for example are only playable from disc, but their digital versions can be downloaded through the Master Chief Collection. A rare handful of games are only available digitally, some are region-exclusive, and other games have been delisted over the years.
