HBO’s acclaimed fantasy show Game of Thrones is coming to an end with its eighth and final season in 2019. It’s expected to be a dramatic, action-packed season, and for the actors–at least those whose characters have survived the bloodshed–it’s the end of a professional era.
Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister on the show, has spoken to Vulture about his final day on set. He said his final day shooting was anti-climatic because, as with many shows and movies, Game of Thrones is filmed out of order. That’s a bit of a bummer when it’s your last day with a character, but Dinklage said other elements made it a better experience.
“Nothing is shot chronologically, so you don’t get some big mountaintop scene or anything. It’s just, “That’s a wrap on Peter Dinklage,'” the actor said. “But as anticlimactic as it was, my last day was also beautifully bittersweet. A lot of people whom I love were on set that day. Even if they weren’t working, they came to set, which was beautiful.”
Dinklage said he tried to do the same for other Game of Thrones actors when they were filming their final scenes. The actor said he was particularly moved by the final day for one of the younger actors.
“I won’t say their name or their character’s name, but one of the young people on the show wrapped this past season and everybody was a wreck,” Dinklage said. “This person had grown up on the show, you know? They were a child and now they were an adult. And then they’re done. It’s like we were witnessing this person saying good-bye to their childhood. I know Game of Thrones is just a TV show, la-di-da, but it was our life.”
There is expected to be bloodshed in the final Game of Thrones season, including deaths. But what will happen with Tyrion? It’s a mystery for now, but Dinklage said he’s satisfied with the conclusion for his character.
“I feel very, very–I’m trying to find the right word. I think he was given a very good conclusion,” he said. “No matter what that is–death can be a great way out.”
The Vulture interviewer said they believed Dinklage was not necessarily suggesting that Tyrion is going to die, only that it could happen. HBO is reportedly shooting multiple endings for Game of Thrones, so even the actors may not know the fate of their characters.

While there are only six episodes in the final Game of Thrones season, each one might be as long as a movie. And it sounds like there will be some epic sequences, as one of the battles required 55 consecutive nights of shooting.
The final Game of Thrones season is set to premiere sometime in 2019. Author George R.R. Martin recently said he believes the show could have run for 11, 12, or even 13 seasons, though he understands that Benioff and D.B. Weiss want to go do new things.
