As you’re probably aware if you have a pulse and have been on the internet or outside your house at any point in the last year, Solo: A Star Wars story tells the story of a young Han Solo. But which story, exactly? When is Solo set in the Star Wars timeline?
Sussing out which Star Wars movies take place when can be a bit confusing for non-diehard fans. It doesn’t help that George Lucas started in the literal middle of the story, with Episode IV: A New Hope. Although the original trilogy came out 20 years before the prequels, the prequels are–naturally–set earlier.
Solo, it turns out, takes place in between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. But is it possible to pinpoint it even more precisely than that?
Actor Alden Ehrenreich’s version of Han Solo is relatively young, but he’s not a little kid, and he doesn’t age visibly during the movie. That can make it hard to tell, while you’re watching, when exactly Solo is set. Han is a young adult and the ending leaves things vague enough that it’s not easy to tell how much time passes between Solo‘s ending and A New Hope.
Luckily, there is more specific answer, according to the movie’s writers, father and son team Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan.
“It’s about 10 years before Mos Eisley,” Lawrence Kasdan told GameSpot during a recent interview.
“We wanted to allow a decade between those events,” added his son, Jonathan Kasdan.
So there you have it. Solo is set roughly a decade before Han meets Luke Skywalker in the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine. No matter where the movie leaves our scoundrel hero, that gives him plenty of time to become the cynical smuggler Luke meets in A New Hope–and plenty of time for more Solo-starring movies to take place in between, should Disney decide to go that route.
Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters next Friday, May 25. For more coverage check out our Solo: A Star Wars Story review. Oh, and if you’re wondering whether Solo has a C-3PO cameo, here’s your answer.
